The Itsy Bitsy Keyboard

You know I am on the verge of buying one of those kiddy keyboards -- one of those gigantor things in bright pink or yellow with the humongous keys. If I had wanted a laptop keyboard with itty bitty little soft keys that were very close together, I'd have bought a freakin' laptop.

Update: turn off computer. Unplug keyboard from back. Take to wall. Smash keyboard against wall. Repeatedly. Until keys fly off everywhere and there are dents in the wall and cat has gone to hide in farthest corner of apartment. Take a deep, satisfied breath.

Don't worry, folks: it's just a fantasy. So far.

Keyboards are a classic case of de gustibus but you might give a Mac keyboard a try. I'm using one on a KVM switch with my Linux box, my Mac, and my Windows machine, and it works great on all three (also works great on my Windows/Linux notebook, when I plug it into the remaining port on the KVM so I can use a "real" keyboard, mouse, and monitor). I like the keyboard action and the key size a lot. Your mileage may vary.

The other nifty thing is that it gives you two more USB ports right on the keyboard where you can get to them easily. That's a nice feature if you have any USB stuff like cameras or keychain Flash RAM "drives". No more rooting around behind the machine!

The only real drawback is that the position of the alt key and the Apple key (which functions as the Windows key when plugged into a Windows box) are reversed from what you're probably used to on Windows.

There's a utility out there to swap them, but I didn't bother with it.

Go smash the keyboard, then go get one from IBM at CompUSA. They're about $20 and they are exactly what you're looking for. I guarantee it, or your money back. I'm a Logitech guy, but for no apparent reason. They seem to be full-sized, and easy to use.

You know, I should have bought one of the IBM keyboards, but my cheap side took over.
